June 5th is celebrated as World Environment Day. This year India is the host country for this world event. The theme for this year is beat plastic pollution. This video gives out some facts, figures, and trivia about the plastic being used in the world and the major crisis we are facing because of consumption of plastic and its production. These shocking environmental facts are interesting for students and elders alike. I have compiled some of these to highlight the importance of world environment day. It is important that knowing this, we should go green and strive to help clean up the global environment.

10 Shocking Environmental Facts:

  1. Every year the world uses up to 5 trillion plastic bags

  2. Everywhere in the world about 1 million plastic bottles are used every minute

  3. Our oceans are dumped with 13 million tonnes of plastic each year.

  4. Because of this extreme plastic pollution, the amount of plastic waste by weight will be more than fishes in the ocean by the year 2050.

  5. We recycle only about 10% of the plastic that we utilize.

  6. The total production of plastic in the last 10 years has been same as the amount produced in the last 100 years.

  7. As much as half of the plastic produced is single-use or disposable

  8. One-tenth of all of the garbage in the world consists of only plastic.

  9. By 2050, there will be 12 billion metric tons of plastic in landfills

  10. Plastic manufacturing has outpaced nearly every other man-made material.

How you can contribute:

1. Bring your own shopping bags to the supermarket
2. Pressure food suppliers to use non-plastic packaging
3. Carry your own water bottles.
4. Refuse plastic cutlery
5. Pick up any waste plastic on the road
6. Use plastic that's easily degradable or recyclable.
